Cape May Convention Hall

Cape May MAC’s annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series brings renowned speakers to Cape May to offer illuminating insights within their respective fields. In this 13th year, Professor of English Carla J. Mulford, Penn State University, and Director of the Library & Museum Michelle Craig McDonald, American Philosophical Society, present this in-depth look at founding father Benjamin Franklin. The lecture will explore Franklin’s role in the American Revolution and his crucial role as European diplomat. Franklin was the public face for independence, individual rights and freedom from political tyranny. His private agony was his beloved son, governor of New Jersey, who remained steadfastly devoted to Britain. Through it all, Franklin’s wit and wisdom helped put a stamp on the new nation. History literally comes alive in Cape May, our nation’s oldest seaside resort – from our Native American and Dutch roots, to our beloved Victorian architecture, to the City’s roles in World War I and II. We are even the only city in the U.S. to be wholly designated as a national historic district. The Myles Martel Lessons of History Fund Endowment supports important programming on history in Cape May, such as the annual Lessons of History lecture series. This fund is named in honor of Myles Martel, who created this endowment and tirelessly led our efforts to bring historical programming to Cape May for many years.
