Cape May MAC’s Carroll Gallery Exhibit: ‘Quackery: The Age of Questionable Medical Marvels’  open April 14-Oct. 31

(Feb. 22, 2023) CAPE MAY (photo courtesy of Cape May MAC): Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) presents “Quackery: The Age of Questionable Medical Marvels,” an exhibit featuring some of the so-called medical marvels of the late 19th and early 20th century, open to the public April 14 through Oct. 31. Many of these “curatives” were not only ineffective, but they were also downright dangerous. Learn about these so-called remedies, and the societal and economic forces that unleashed these questionable treatments on the public, driven by hucksterism, false advertising and get-rich-quick schemes. Check out Prof. Hudzik’s Medicine Wagon—a replica of what would have been used to purvey such cure-alls, complete with a QR code to hear what his spiel would have sounded like! …

Cape May MAC launches new daily calendar app

(Feb. 15, 2023) CAPE MAY (photo courtesy of Cape May MAC): Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) announces the creation of a new mobile app. The app, self-titled “Cape May MAC,” will allow users to view a daily calendar of tours and events in an easily accessible format and to purchase tour and event tickets directly in the app. Users will be able to sort through tours and events by location—such as the Cape May Lighthouse, the World War II Lookout Tower, and/or the Physick House Museum—and by thematic groupings such as walking tours, house tours, trolley tours and more. ….

Cape May MAC’s ‘An Old-fashioned Christmas’ Exhibit, Nov. 18-Jan. 1, rings in holiday cheer

Hosted at the Carroll Gallery on the grounds of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, this charming exhibit has welcomed thousands of holiday visitors, both young and old, over the years. Cape May MAC presents 49th Annual Christmas Candlelight House Tours on Dec. 3, 10 & 17

(Nov. 15, 2022) CAPE MAY –  Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) launched the Cape May Christmas Candlelight House tour in 1974 and ever since it has been a highlight of the Christmas season in Cape May, America’s only National Historic Landmark City. On three nights in December visitors travel to homes, inns, B&Bs, churches and hotels, stepping across the thresholds to take in interiors beautifully decorated for the holidays. Over a dozen properties are on tour each of three evenings. The three Christmas Candlelight House Tours of the 2022 season are Saturday, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Maps and wristbands for ticket purchasers are provided in advance or at central locations at the start of the tour and must be presented at each participating location for entry. A trolley shuttle travels on a planned route with limited stops, but walking is encouraged. The tour is limited, and advance purchase is highly recommended.

Halloween Happenings in Victorian Cape May feature ghosts & spirits tours, activities and events in October

(Aug. 24, 2022) CAPE MAY –  October in Cape May is the spooky season with ghosts and spirits claiming their place along the backstreets and byways of this historic seaside town. Victorian Cape May, the nation’s oldest seashore resort, is surrounded on three sides by water at the southernmost point of New Jersey. National Park Service app includes Cape May’s Underground Railroad Trolley Tour

(April 18, 2022) CAPE MAY – A powerful advocate, freedom fighter, and hero, Harriet Tubman’s story takes form in a new trip-planning tool through the National Park Service (NPS) app. Travel with Tubman: Let Harriet Tubman Guide You on the Journey of a Lifetime highlights 13 sites that most affected Tubman throughout her life, representative of her 13 rescue missions to Maryland. One of these 13 “sites” is Cape May MAC’s Underground Railroad Trolley Tour, the first stop of which is at South Cape May Meadows Beach off Mount Vernon Avenue. At the stop, tour-goers hear the story of six freedom seekers in 1860 who braved the Delaware Bay to cross to freedom by boat into New Jersey, guided by the light of the Cape May Lighthouse. The Cape May MAC/Center for Community Arts (CCA) Underground Railroad Trolley Tour is a Network to Freedom member, a minimum qualification for inclusion in the new app. …

Cape May Music Festival all live in 2022

(April 7, April 18, 2022) CAPE MAY – After mostly virtual concerts in 2020 and a hybrid of virtual and in-person concerts in 2021, this year’s 33rd annual Cape May Music Festival, presented by Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture), brings back an all-live, in-person, indoor and outdoor concert schedule. Carroll Gallery Exhibit ‘A Diamond of Their Own’ celebrates baseball’s Negro Leagues with artistic vision and historic artifacts

(Jan. 25, 2022) CAPE MAY – An exhibit celebrating the history of baseball’s Negro Leagues is open through April 30 at the Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May, N.J. Admission is free.

“A Diamond of Their Own: The Remarkable History of the Negro Leagues as portrayed by artist Sydnei SmithJordan,” is presented by Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) and Center for Community Arts (CCA), in partnership with artist Sydnei SmithJordan. The exhibit features original artwork created by SmithJordan and artist Chanelle René, that celebrates the indomitable spirit and talent of the men and women who played for the Negro Leagues. The exhibit includes vintage baseball memorabilia and artifacts, courtesy of CCA, The Dempsey family, Mark Kulkowitz, SmithJordan, and Janis Washington White, including historic photos and text from the early days of the Negro Leagues. …
